Three Goals for the School Year

Sitting on my bed in my college dorm room
I am already in love with my dorm room and how cozy it feels!
Writing goals for myself each week
Setting weekly goals helps to keep me accountable and achieve my bigger goals that I set for myself each year!

While it’s important to follow through on goals and get out there and meet people, it’s equally as important to give yourself a break! I love recharging in my dorm room with a good book!

I love setting goals for myself. I feel like they help me to grow as a person and accomplish so much more. Also, I don’t know about you, but I am a bit of a competitive person. I am always trying to beat myself with scores or doing something better a second time. Can anyone else relate?? Setting goals for myself brings out my competitive nature because I always want to beat the goals I set. Unlike the start of of the school year last year, this year I am setting goals for myself that I believe to be attainable and that will push myself out of my comfort zone to help me grow as a person.

Goals

Goal #1: Make 1 good friend

Given my nonverbal learning disability, friends are a really hard thing for me. I have a hard time communicating with people and keeping the conversation going. Small talk is not my strong suit, in part because I struggle to pick up on nonverbal social cues. I realize that having at least one good friend at school will likely help to make it more enjoyable. I am setting the goal of one friend because I feel like that is a good place to start. If I end up with more than one friend great, but if I have only built one really good friendship by the end of the school year, then I will have accomplished my goal!

Goal #2: Join another club on campus

My freshman year I joined one club: DECA, which is essentially a business simulation club. Throughout the year I participated in events and activities through the club and met some really nice people. While I still plan on participating in DECA this year, I would like to join another club to get more involved and meet new people. By joining another club, and sticking with it, this will also help me with my first goal of making friends.

Goal #3: Participate in three campus events

Throughout my freshman year I went to several campus events, mainly through DECA. I want to force myself to continue to get more involved and attend at least three of these events. They could be through a club or just a regular event on campus. I set the goal of three events because I feel like this would be attainable. Only attending one event felt too easy. Three felt like a good number because that doesn’t seem to easy or too hard. I want to push myself hard but not too hard.

Don’t Overdo It

I am only setting three goals for myself because I don’t want to create too many. I want to push myself hard enough but not too hard. If I push myself too hard I fear I may cause myself too much anxiety and it will backfire on me. As well, these three goals will help me to accomplish my overall goal of getting more involved on campus and creating lasting friendships. I have high hopes for this year, and I look forward to pushing myself to get more involved.

Goal setting is one of my favorite things! I set goals for myself each week. They help me to measure my progress and see how I am doing and where I could still use some improvements. I would love to know what some of your goals are for this academic year and why you chose them! Let me know in the comments down below! Or if you don’t set goals, let me know how you measure your progress and push yourself to try new things!
